The Key To Rest
Those who live in the shelter of the Most High will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty. This I declare about the Lord: He alone is my refuge, my place of safety; he is my God, and I trust him.
Psalms 91:1-2 (NLT)
Psalms 91 was one of the first chapters in the Bible that I memorized in its entirety thanks to my parents. It is a very familiar scripture and it is a reminder of the undeniable promise of protection that we have in Christ. I only listed verse 1 and 2 as an anchor for this week’s devotional but I strongly encourage you to read the entire chapter as often as possible. I would also encourage you to look at various translations. On the topic of rest, we have to cling to Verse 1: “Those who live in the shelter of the Most High will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty.” When you read other translations, you may find the use of the words: live, dwell, or sit but each word is used in the present tense and it implies a continuous action.
When we are consistent in our pursuit of the presence of God we will find ourselves covered and protected. We can access His presence in the shelter of the Most High. This shelter is a hiding place for our souls. It is referred to as the Secret Place in the King James Version. This place is reserved for those who call upon the name of the Lord. His shadow precedes us in our coming and going. It is where He will hide us and shield us from peace stealers: worry, doubt, fear, anxiety, and the list goes on. When we make a daily choice to LIVE, DWELL, SIT, ABIDE, ______ (add an applicable verb) in the shelter of the Most High, we will find rest.
