The Blessing of Burnout

“Come to Me, all who are weary and heavily burdened [by religious rituals that provide no peace], and I will give you rest [refreshing your souls with salvation]. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me [following Me as My disciple], for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest (renewal, blessed quiet) for your souls. For My yoke is easy [to bear] and My burden is light.”

Matthew 11:28-30 (amp)

Yes, you read the title right! So now that I have your attention let me ask you a question:

Are you tired, drained, burnt out? That’s great! It’s probably right where our Heavenly Father wants you to be, at the end of your rope. It’s a tough pill to swallow but there is a blessing in burnout because it is where we learn that “apart from Him we can do nothing” (John 15:15).

The Lord isn’t looking for us to do anything for Him. We don’t have to perform or remain in a constant state of doing. All of the work was done when Jesus went to the cross (John 19:30). When we receive Jesus as our Lord and Savior, we become the recipients of God’s Grace. It is by His Grace that we are saved (Ephesians 2:8). God’s grace is a gift. It is His unmerited favor, and it is sufficient, and it is made perfect in our weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9). That is good news!

He also invites us to take on His yoke. In Biblical times a yoke was used to bind two animals together to perform strenuous tasks. Jesus used the analogy of the yoke because it was something that the people of that day could identify with but the point that he wanted to convey to them and to us today is that we are not required to carry the weight of the world. This includes tasks that we have taken on because it seemed like the right thing to do at some point in time.

Developing a relationship with Jesus will help us to identify the areas that are causing us to walk out of step with Him. When we are out of step it is typically because we aren’t in alignment with His plan for our life. When we are out of alignment, we have likely picked up some things that have become burdensome. If we have taken on something that is weighing us down, it is not of Him. These “things” ultimately lead to burnout. The burnout will come to knock us of course but the blessing is in knowing that our Heavenly Father is waiting for us to accept the open invitation that he has given us through his Son Jesus. Let Him help you walk the path that leads to rest for your soul.
